John Funnell is a Trance and Hard Trance DJ based in the South East of England.

His cutting-edge taste in uplifting and euphoric trance have won him great acclaim in the current dance music scene, landing him sets at events organised by many great record labels such as Tidy and Euphoria.

John needed a site to host demonstrations of his mixing online so that promoters could obtain them easily. He also wanted it to be somewhere where dance music fans could keep up to date on the events he was playing.

Grunge Styling

Part of John’s original specification hinted that he wanted something modern in design; something that fitted his music style but that wasn’t too dark in overall feel.

A few hours research later and I’d discovered that most Trance and Hard Trance DJs had gone with dark sites; alot of blacks and grey-blues with an underlying technology theme. John, on the other hand, wanted his site to be light and uplifting so I decided to go with a bright colour with a grunge overtone.

To keep the design crisp, we decided upon a clean and modern logo design using the excellent font, “Eurostile”. This allowed me to keep the grunge under control, ultimately trimming the branding/header image quite nicely.

Funky Lists and Tables

Another of John’s key requirements for the design was easily readable lists and tables. John had outlined his desire to include a table of his latest mixing demos along with a list of his 10 favourite tunes of the moment - two features he felt needed to be displayed well.

As you can see from the site, I achieved this using the Zebra Tables technique with some nice gradient-backed table headers.

Web Standards

Although he is a web developer by day, John didn’t really have time to create the site himself, which is why he got Nefarious Designs to do it for him. However, he did want to maintain the site himself so he asked if I could make the code fairly simple to understand. I explained to him that because I develop using web standards, any changes he wished to make would be quick and painless because the code is automatically easy to understand.
